Ghost Island

Map Office

We were engaged for project management in Map Office’s Ghost Island project, their contribution to the 8th Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture in Shenzhen. The piece was part of the exhibition, Sea of Time, curated by Shangqi Art and was originally exhibited at the 1st Thailand Biennale in 2018.

Ghost nets (lost or abandoned nets) are a result of irresponsible fishing practices that endanger marine life and harm the environment.

Ghost Island was a 9 meter pile of ghost fishing nets collected in the sea around Krabi Province, Thailand and recalls the geology of the islands of the region. The art piece addressed the problem of waste at sea, and the difficult but necessary labour needed to protect our environment.
